Jaya says she is with Vajpayee, despite support for Opposition strike

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham chief J Jayalalitha today pledged her party's continued support to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and declared that the party joining the December 11 general strike was only to express solidarity with the working class.

In an informal chat with the media at the AIADMK headquarters in Madras, she said her party joining the strike had no bearing on its relationship with the Centre and the BJP, which she conceded was "uneasy".

That the relationship was uneasy does not mean it was breaking up, she said, and called for efforts to strengthen it.

Affirming that her party would support the insurance bill being introduced in Parliament on Friday, Jayalalitha said her party, which stood for stability, had proved wrong constant media prediction that she would wreck the government.

Her own contribution for stability at the Centre was paramount and it was not based on narrow political consideration but in national interest, she said.
