Police arrest five of Veerappan's gang

In a pre-dawn swoop, the combined Special Task Force of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu arrested five associates of forest brigand Veerappan, including a woman, in the Thalavadi-Aasanoor reserve forest range on the interstate border.

Acting on a tip off, the task force personnel had launched a search operation early on Sunday, Madras Police Commissioner P Kalimuthu, who is also the joint commandant of the combined forces, said.

The arrested are: Magadevan alias Mathaiyan, Jadayan, Kumbi (wife of Thuppakki Chithan, a Veerappan associate), Jayaraman alias Krishnan and Suresh.

They were produced in a magistrate court in Erode and remanded to judicial custody.

The police recovered two country-made muzzle-loading guns from them.
