Cops confused over 'mysterious' letter

The police are trying to ascertain whether a letter purportedly sent by wanted Al-Umma activists Ayesha and her husband Ibrahim to Madras Police Commissioner P Kalimuthu yesterday, offering to surrender, was really sent by them.

The police suspect that the letter, in which the duo had also offered to unravel the mystery behind the recent seizure of large quantities of explosives in the city, could be a ploy to divert their efforts to apprehend anti-social and fundamentalist forces trying to disturb peace in the state.

In the letter, Ayesha and Ibrahim had offered to surrender if they are given an assurance that no case would be registered against them. They hoped that the generous treatment meted out to the five associates of forest brigand Veerappan, arrested yesterday, would also be extended to them.
