In a move harkening back to his debut film, the guru of gloss Karan Johar shows us a school that'll make our alma maters appear less shiny, our students less toned, our high-school competitions less blockbustery.

Ah well, Johar's not making any stab at being grounded, and at least those of us beyond a school age don't have to suck in our guts. If you are in school, however, Johar's made sure those of you who can't carry off hot pants will feel dramatically out of shape.

Student Of The Year stars Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt's daughter) and Varun Dhawan (David Dhawan's son). As launch vehicles go, this looks like an unabashedly glitzy ride. It also looks considerably fresh, thanks to the new faces on display. Bhatt, in particular, looks quite winsome.

It feels more like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar on steroids than it does Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which is a pretty good sign. We need new people to root for.
