Ooh, there's going to be some thrilling 3D in this one. The trailer for Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's Life Of Pi makes an instant splash.
Literally. A young boy (Suraj Sharma, playing Pi) gazes awestruck into a stormy, unforgiving sea, lashing his vessel with tremendous waves. He gallops into the hold, jumps into more water where he encounters... a zebra.
The book is about a boy marooned on a lifeboat with a Royal Bengal tiger, and Lee paints that unique situation with almost Gilliam-esque surreality, like a picture postcard turning into a Dali doodle.
Yet - as we see with the dazzling whirl of colour and light - this promises to be a vivid adventure, not minimalist in any way. None of the better known Indians in the film's cast - Tabu, Irrfan, Sonu Sood - show up in the trailer, however.
Lee really looks to be enjoying himself with the depth of field 3D allows, and this December release will surely be - if nothing else - a visual extravaganza.
