Except as much one appreciates their tour de force performances that challenges the very title 'career best' with every subsequent film, after numerous nominations and wins a sense of monotony and deja vu begins to set in. And that's when the need to witness an 'underdog' moment, wherein an unexpected but well-deserved candidate nabs the coveted Oscar.

Like the time first-time nominee Cuba Gooding Jr beat the likes of James Woods, Edward Norton and William H Macy to win the Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire.

The upshot was one of the most memorably emotional, enthusiastic speeches of all times. Or director Roman Polanski's triumph over favourites Rob Marshall (Chicago) and Stephen Daldry (The Hours) to receive top honors for The Pianist.
