But once in a while, it surprises us with unusual tales of the unlikeliest of bonds between random people, who come together by a quirk of fate.
Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur starrer The Lunchbox, the story of two strangers who fall in love with each other without ever having met, is one such film.
A story peppered with memorable exchanges of dabbas and hand-written notes, the film is one of the most delightful love stories we'll see this year.

Bodyguard
Despite having been around her throughout the film, Salman's Lovlely Singh fails to recognise his secret admirer -- Kareena Kapoor's Divya -- and is made to believe his secret lover is Divya's best friend Maya (Hazel Keech).
Worse still, Lovely and Maya get married and it's only after Maya passes away that he finds out who his true love actually was.
Lovely is eventually united with Divya in the end.
Deewana Main Deewana
Stuck in the cans for almost a decade, this Govinda and Priyanka Chopra starrer released and disappeared quietly a few weeks ago.
Govinda's Basant apparently assumes a false identity to win over the girl of his dreams, Priya (Priyanka Chopra).
Guess it's wise to leave this one at that.
Don
Priyanka Chopra's Roma wants to nab drug kingpin Don and put him away for life but she soon realises that it's Vijay, a simpleton, Don's lookalike planted by the cops to nab the real man.
Many songs, dances, chases and drama later, she realises that she's been wooed by the wrong man and that the real Don was never dead.
Paheli
Based on a short story, Paheli is the story of a lovelorn Lachchi (Rani Mukerji), who falls in love with a ghost who assumes the form of her husband (Shah Rukh Khan as Kishanlal) while he is away on business.
In the end, it became a moral dilemma for Lachchi as she's faced with the decision to choose between her husband and the ghost.
Sirf Tum
Sanjay Kapoor and Priya Gill play pen pals Deepak and Aarti in this charming love story brimming with innocence and first rushes of love.
Aarti later sets out to meet Deepak in Delhi and the lovers are reunited in the end.
Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon
The name Prem becomes a bone of contention in this love triangle as Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor) falls in love with the wrong Prem (Hrithik Roshan).
Sanjana's intended suitor -- the other Prem -- arrives on the scene just as her passionate love story progresses with his namesake.
While the film is forgettable to say the least, it stands out for relentless overacting by Himani Shivpuri, who plays Sanjana's overbearing mother in the film.
Mujhse Dosti Karoge!
In this Yash Chopra love story, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor's characters find themselves in a similar situation.
Rani Mukerji's Pooja steps in (via emails) to make Hrithik's Raj believe that he is interacting with Tina (Kareena).
The Japanese Wife
Adapted from a book and directed by Aparna Sen, The Japanese Wife had Rahul Bose fall in love with his Japanese pen pal (Chigusa Takaku), who lived in Japan.
A photograph acts as a medium for Bose to find his love in in another country.
And this pair of lovers never meets.
Bombai Ka Babu
A rare Hindi film that tread on the topic of incest, Bombai Ka Babu had Dev Anand falling in love with Suchitra Sen, his 'sister'.
There's a sense of sexual tension between Anand's Kundan/Babu and Sen's Maya.
A couple of major twists in the story, however, prevent the film from culminating in a shocking end.
Eventually, Anand gives Sen a fitting 'bidaai' as his sister.
