Apara Mehta, who became popularas Savita, the tyrannical mother-in-law in Ekta Kapoor's iconic show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahi Thi is back with a new show.
In Hamari Saas Leela, that'll be aired today at 7 PM on Colors, the actress plays a mother-in-law again. Only this time, she plays Leela, a protagonist who has a middle class background and a rags-to-riches story.
Leela is a modern woman and believes that each one should have the freedom to select their own life partner but due to circumstances, she decides to scout for a 'perfect bride' for her sons herself. Apara says, 'A lot of mothers can relate to my character since like most of them, Leela looks out for the well being of her children. There is a lot of humour in the show.
When asked about her favourite Saas on television right now, she says, "There are only a handful of such characters that were really well etched out and set a trend. If people connect with my new role (Leela), possibly that will be the fifth one."
The actress proceeds to tell us about her favourite on-screen mothers-in-law. Have a look:
First one has to be my onscreen mother-in-law Baa. She was a kind soul who looked at her husband and children. Baa kept her family together and had to make many compromises in the way.
She had the ability to maintain a bond among the family members and make it survive all the difficulties. Baa never interfered with anyone's work and gave space to each individual.
Daadisa is the ultimate character and is beautifully played by Surekha Sikri. You cannot imagine anyone else but Surekhaji doing this role. You get to learn so much just by watching her perform.
She comes across as unforgiving at times but that's the way the character is supposed to be. She is orthodox yet loving. She behaves according to circumstances.
Savitha was a very real character, not just black or white. She was sophisticated, educated but had grey shades also like any other person would have which was realistic.
She liked Tulsi (Smriti Irani) as pujari's daughter but the moment her son marries her she has a problem with her. It's not wrong on Savitha's part also because it's a human nature, wanting to have a daughter- in -law of the same socio-economic stature.
She was highly opinionated and outspoken, that was one of the reasons for her confrontations with Tulsi.
Sumithra becomes a mother to her daughter-in-law (Anandi) in the truest sense. At times we get the feeling that she has given more love to her daughter-in-law than her own children. She has done her duties very well as a mother-in-law.
