The release of Malayalam films have been on a rise since the last two years. But TV channels restrictions on satellite rights has resulted in a big crisis in Malayalam cinema.

The industry is yet to recover from its effects.

The number of releases hasn’t really gone down this year thanks to the inflow of low-key projects in big numbers, but the number of big projects has gone down considerably.

Here are five successful Malayalam films that hit the screens this year.

Ohm Shaanthi Oshaana

Director: Jude Anthany Joseph

Cast: Nazriya Nazim, Nivin Pauly

Debutant director Jude Anthany Joseph’s Ohm Shaanthi Oshaana was the story of a vivacious young girl who was dying to fall in love.

When she did, it was with a guy who seemed to ignore her presence.

Funny and engaging, the film had nice lines and good performances.

Bangalore Days

Director: Anjali Menon

Cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Nivin Pauly, Fahadh Faasil

Three cousins go to Bangalore for reasons of their own.

Dulquer played a rebel, while Nivin never let the cosmopolitan culture affect him beyond a point. The newly married Nazriya was finding it difficult to cope with her husband’s serious nature.

At close to three hours, Bangalore Days is a fun ride that introduces the chic style in Malayalam cinema.

1983

Director: Abrid Shine

Cast: Nivin Pauly, Nikki

Debutant director Abrid Shine’s 1983 scored mainly due to its innate honesty.

The film presented the glamorous Nivin Pauly as a loser, who finally succeeds in realising his dreams through his son.

7th Day

Director: Shyam Dhar

Cast: Prithviraj

It is to Prithviraj’s credit that he found potential in scenarist Akhil Paul’s storyline and agreed to do this film, directed by debutant Shyam Dhar.

The film was far from perfect, but managed to thrill viewers and ended up being a winner at the box office as well.

How Old Are You

The struggles of a normal housewife were brought to the screen by Rosshan Andrrews in How Old Are You.

Manju Warrier returned to the screen after 14 years and Malayalis welcomed her back with great enthusiasm.
