The BEST way to propose, Bollywood style!

Last updated on: February 14, 2012 14:30 IST

Want to propose to your sweetheart on Valentine's Day? Bollywood provides some great suggestions.

The initial attraction, trying to look one's best. Thereafter, one's days are filled with the excitement of getting to know each another.

Next, follows the realisation of a 'someone' turning into 'the one.' And the anxiety of taking it forward leads to the most imaginative or impulsive romantic proposal.

It's the first step to any happily-after and the most precious too. Movies love to play on this attractive possibility through dreamy love songs, enchanting poetry or simply outright.

And so from heartfelt to hilarious, we take a look at the different variety of romantic proposals in Bollywood films.

Filmi, very filmi

Imran Khan and

Film: Jaane Tu Yaa...Jaane Naa

From a mild-mannered, pacifist type to getting bailed out of prison, horse-riding his way to the airport in the middle of the night, checking in without a boarding pass while a dozen cops hot on his trail and finally singing the song from Aa Gale Lag Ja, inspiring the film's title to draw an amazed Genelia D'Souza's attention to rolling in happy hugs at the lounge floor, Imran Khan's proposal is most wild, romantic and fun.

Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan in Chupke Chupke

Film: Chupke Chupke

Over agonising lessons of corollas and genda/gobhi phools, Amitabh Bachchan, pretending to be his best friend, a Botany professor, has fallen head over heels in love with his unsuspecting student, Jaya.

Unable to understand his eagerness, unwilling to stand her aloofness, one fine day the lanky actor spills the means in the most adorable fashion, 'Main English ka professor hoon, Sukumar Sinha. Botany ka B bhi nahi jaanta. Main toh sirf itna jaanta hoon ki aap Vasudha hain aur aapki meri donoki shaadi nahi hui abhi tak.'

Bhagyashree in Maine Pyar Kiya

Film: Maine Pyaar Kiya

How to take friendship to another level? Salman Khan employs to the tried and tested love letter method in Sooraj Barjatya's Maine Pyaar Kiya.

His gooey 'I love you so much, it hurts' theory is enough to impress Bhagyashree (and every single girl who saw the movie) and she promptly responds and asks an ever-obliging kabootar to pass on the message.

Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Salman Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Film: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Just a few days ago, best friends Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol) played a game of dumb charade at a summer camp. At that time, Rahul's team loses because he fails to communicate 'I love you.'

On realising he's in love with her, he goes to meet Anjali only to discover she's a few minutes away from tying the knot to Salman Khan.

Cut to Rahul entering a room looking for his little girl, bumps into a fully-decked Anjali (looking out for an elusive shooting star) instead. First, he turns away. Then he returns and quietly does the I-love-you gesture, like in the game before the teary duo parts from each other. Sweet, sad, the works.

Needless to say, things end on a much more happier note than that.

The indirect approach

Ranbir Kapoor and konkona Sen Sharma in Wake Up Sid

Film: Wake Up Sid

Often one is too conscious of admitting their feelings. Or the other's too dim to pick clues. Like in Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor's case. And so they both cleverly use their skills to convey the same.

He gifts her a frame of one of the candid shots he took. She writes a lovey-dovey article about the city of Mumbai only to say it's the boy and not really the city she's fallen for. The broad hint works and concludes with a warm hug in the rain.

It's complicated

Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in Lamhe

Film: Lamhe

He loved the mother (Sridevi). He loves her daughter too (Sridevi again). But Anil Kapoor's Viren takes his own sweet time before arriving to this unusual conclusion.

At first he snubs the latter's affections only to realise the face, the fragrance and the feelings that capture his heart no longer belong to her mother but her alone. And he finally admits this to her, with a rather poetic proposal in the film's final moments, against the grand architecture of Rajasthan.

Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah in Sparsh

Film: Sparsh

He's blind. She's bereaved.

When Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi's characters come together, they gradually begin to heal and fill the void that occupies their respective lives. But he's proud and hesitates to admit so, 'Tumhare aur mere andhere mein farq hai.'

At this point, Azmi reasonably proposes, 'Kya humara ujaala ek nahi ho sakta?' A startled split second later, the couple warmly acknowledges the shifting dynamics of their relationship.

Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Naa Ho

Film: Kal Ho Naa Ho

For all his tips and tactics to teach Saif Ali Khan on how to win Preity Zinta's heart in six days, Shah Rukh Khan's Aman is strictly speaking for himself at the train station scene.

Though he refused to reciprocate a couple of reels earlier owing to his terminal illness, he secretly wishes otherwise. And so when he gets the bizarre opportunity, SRK spontaneously reads out from a diary, a blank one in actuality, pouring his true feelings to a confounded PZ, 'Main tumhe zindagi bhar pyaar karoonga. Aur marte dum tak pyaar karoonga. Aur uske baad bhi.'

Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan in Satte Pe Satta

Film: Satte Pe Satta

What happens when a grubby farm boy falls for a sparkly nurse?

A grubby and tactless Big B decides to woo the prim Hema Malini by sending her a hefty, healthy watermelon. As expected, it gets a smashing reception. Fortunately, he realises the significance of 'nazakat' over 'taaqat' before it's too late and starts on a clean slate.

The new, improved spic & span AB goes for the roses and RD melody route, which true to its record, never fails.

Preity Zinta and Aamir Khan in Dil Chahta Hai

Film: Dil Chahta Hai

Aamir Khan's Akash was never about subtlety. So when he decides to open up to the girl he loves (Preity Zinta), he makes sure it's in full, public view. And, um, on the day of her engagement to another guy.He goes on his knees, reproduces the same lines he had tried on her in their first meeting at a nightclub as part of a prank. This time, of course, he means it.

To think it's all very cheesy but AK appears so genuine, he makes it work.
