The initial buzz on Marc Webb's upcoming Spider-Man reboot seemed to signal that Irrfan Khan will play Proto-Goblin, a less significant but awfully vile foe of Spidey's, and while these brand new pictures come with a press release detailing a different role for Khan, one shouldn't rule the Goblin buzz out completely just yet.

Khan plays Dr Ratha, a key part of Oscorp research and a close associate of Dr Curt Connors (played by Rhys Ifans) who will turn into the film's main villain, The Lizard. The reason I say he could have a link with Goblin technology is because Oscorp is owned by Norman Osbourne (played by Willem Defoe in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films, possibly not featuring in this new film) who later becomes Spidey's greatest foe, The Green Goblin.

Irrfan Khan has appeared in many acclaimed foreign films -- The Warrior, A Mighty Heart, The Darjeeling Limited, Slumdog Millionaire and The Namesake, among others -- and will be seen in this winter's Life Of Pi, but The Amazing Spider-Man, weighing in at an estimated $260 million, will be Irrfan's biggest budget release to date.

It's a huge stage for one of our finest actors, and we hope Webb's film -- already packed with a terrific ensemble -- has enough for him to do. Either way, we're looking forward.
