Remaking Agneepath doesn't make much sense considering the original was a very ordinary movie, lifted by two extraordinary performances: from Danny Dengzongpa and Amitabh Bachchan.
Having said that, the first look at this Karan Malhotra remake is quite promising, giving us a solid glimpse of the new faces while the music builds rousingly to a crescendo.
The very idea of Hrithik Roshan in an Amitabh Bachchan role sounds bizarre, and Roshan here goes all out trying to channel his inner Amitabh: a bruised face, a jaw hanging open, a split lip... essentially trying to get that look we all remember, that of the battered Angry Young Man about to wipe the blood from his mouth with the back of his wrist.
Roshan looks slightly over the top, but then all is put into perspective when we see Sanjay Dutt looking like an ogre.
Looking like Shrek just swallowed Mogambo, Dutt looks bizarre, like a gigantic supervillain parody. Clearly this isn't a film for nuances and subtleties, but as blockbusters go, it looks pretty committed to its masala roots.
And full marks to Rishi Kapoor, for looking wonderfully creepy. His performance may just be the one to watch out for.
