Ashutosh Gowariker is back to what he does best -- directing historicals. His new film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey will explore a forgotten chapter in history: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-1934.
The main players behind the uprising will be played by Abhishek Bachchan (Surjya Sen), Deepika Padukone (Kalpana Dutta), Vishakha Singh (Pritilata Waddedar) and Sikander Kher (Nirmal Sen).
KHJJS tells the story of a school teacher Surjya Sen, who becomes a revolutionary.
Along with his group of 64 people -- most of them teenagers -- Sen started a revolution in the sleepy port of Chittagong. The group carried out five simultaneous attacks against the British on the night of April 18, 1930.
Preparing for the role was easy and difficult at the same time," Abhishek says. "There wasn't much material on Surjya Sen, so that made it difficult. But since Ashutosh had done extensive research for two years, it became easy."
Abhishek, who wears the dhoti throughout the film, claims that he was very comfortable in it. "I can tie the dhoti easily. In fact, I love the dhoti. If I have my way, I would wear it on a regular basis."
Deepika wears a sari through the film.
Neeta Lulla has designed the attire for the cast.
KHJJS is based on the book Do And Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930 -34 written by journalist Manini Chatterjee.
Deepika's character Kalpana Dutta was Chatterjee's mother-in-law, and so the author received first-hand information about the revolution.
I felt embarrassed when I read the book because I did not know such an important fact about Indian history," Gowariker says. "So I took it upon myself to tell the story to the world."
Though the film is based on a book, and in turn, on a real incident, Gowariker claims that he has taken some cinematic liberties.
"Certain changes were made to enhance the story. But Manini had no objection to it after seeing the final cut," he said.
Gowariker's regular composer A R Rahman will not make the music for KHJJS. Instead, the music has been composed by Sohail Sen, son of Sameer Sen of the noted music director duo Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen.
Sohail had given music for Gowariker's previous film What's Your Raashee? as well.
KHJJS will release on December 3.
The film's music was released on October 27. Watch what transpired right here.
