Bollywood stars have joined thousands of Anna Hazare supporters in voicing their disagreement with the activist's detention. Stars took to Twitter to condemn his arrest, ahead of his indefinite fast in Delhi to protest an ineffectual anti-corruption bill approved by the cabinet.
Bipasha Basu tweeted: 'Anna Hazare needs to be supported to kill the 'Demon' called 'Corruption' that is eating up our Country!'
Shabana Azmi was just as upset. 'We condemn the arrest of Anna Hazare and his team and the ban on the proposed fast. Right to protest peacefully is a democratic right,' she wrote.
Dia Mirza tweeted: 'Its clear the government today has made Anna Hazare a bigger hero than he already was. I support Anna Hazare. India against corruption.'
Farhan Akhtar termed the arrest 'unconstitutional'. 'The Indian citizen has the right to protest peacefully. Anna's arrest is unconstitutional and shows symptoms of an authoritarian mindset,' he updated.
Anupam Kher called today the saddest day of democracy: 'Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal arrested even before they reach JP park. Saddest day for Indian Democracy.'
Shekhar Kapur tweeted: 'The implementation of the #Lokpal bill is complex. But tht cannt take away Anna's right to peaceful demonstration.'
Purab Kohli will be one of the many film personalities who will participate in a protest rally in Azad Maidan, South Mumbai. 'Im going to be at Azad Maidan in Mumbai Post lunch. join me and lets spread some love. Gandhian style!! I feel a fear of being arrested but I'm not going to be an arrested state of being anymore. Ill be at Azad Maidan at 3pm,' he updated.
Vishal Dadlani will join Purab. 'Presenting Anna's draft to parliament is the right course forward, and his arrest is very wrong. Joining the protest at Azad Maidan today,' he tweeted.
Anurag Kashyap is upset with the government too. 'Congress is really behaving like how they did during the emergency, they play it like they really have a lot to hide. Congress,by use of force is just reaffirming the negative view people have of their governance and gives more credibility to the accusations,' he tweeted.
On Independence Day, celebs wished their fans and friends.
Sonam Kapoor tweeted: 'Happy independence day. The best thing about me is that I'm an indian. My country is the strongest wisest and the most peaceful!'
Lara Dutta Bhupathi wrote: 'Little nieces just came back from hoisting the Indian Tiranga at school. Miss that ritual! Have a wonderful Independence Day Folks!'
