When Bollywood went out of this world!
Our girls are out of this world.
Okay, not all of them. Okay, not even most of them. But every now and then Bollywood has flirted with the idea of aliens, mostly to disastrous effect.
Here's a look at some of those times:
Jacqueline in Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai
In Milap Javeri's new film, Jacqueline Fernandes plays a girl from Venus. And while Ritesh Deshmukh might not be from Mars, he is an equally befuddled leading man trying to adjust to this pretty girl mystified by Earth and its ways.
We do expect liberal helpings of misunderstanding, but one hopes there's more.
Jadoo in Koi Mil Gaya
Rakesh Roshan's alien saga borrowed conveniently from both Steven Spielberg's ET: The Extra Terrestrial and Satyajit Ray's treatment of an alien film, but the bright blue alien was all Roshan's own -- a peculiar cobalt troll who walks around making a nerdy kid feel special.
Sridevi in Aadmi Aur Apsara
Telugu superhit Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, directed by K Raghavendra Rao, was dubbed and re-released in Hindi because the leading lady was so popular.
Sridevi plays Indra's daughter who comes to Earth and falls in love with Chiranjeevi, a human taking care of four orphans.
Priyanka in Love Story 2050
Priyanka Chopra isn't technically an alien in Harry Baweja's catastrophic failure of a film, but her futuristic popstar avatar is enough to blur the line.
Priyanka plays a redheaded floozy with a habit of kicking her talking teddy bear when she isn't busy whining and pouting. Earth can do without more of those, really.
Rani in Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic
In this atrocious Kunal Kohli film, Saif Ali Khan stars as a single man who runs over a couple and is, with inexplicable sadism, given the task of rearing the kids he's just orphaned.
The children pray to God for help, and he sends a Punjabi-accented chubby angel to save them, in the shape of Rani Mukherji.
They really weren't kidding when they asked us to be careful what we wished for.
Rani Aur Lalpari
In this Ravikant Nagaich film, not just is there the story of a fairy godmother but much fantasy is spread throughout the film, with Feroz Khan playing Gulliver of Gulliver's Travels and Neetu Singh playing, of all people, Cinderella.
The titular red fairy, though, is played by Reena Roy in this overtly melodramatic children's film.
