The upcoming Main Aur Mrs Khanna is about a breaking marriage.
We realised this is a favourite Bollywood theme, and so decided to take a look at some memorable recent films about marriages on the rocks.
Main Aur Mrs Khanna
In the upcoming Prem Soni film, Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor star as the titular couple who grow apart as Kapoor falls in love with Sohail Khan. What can save their breaking marriage? Apparently, Govinda. Let's wait and watch.
It might not be a serious look at a crumbling marriage, but here's a film based largely on how distrustful a soap-loving housewife can be. Kareena doesn't believe one word Ajay Devgan says, which leads us onto a random rollercoaster of lies lies lies.
On a totally different note, Devgan and wife Kajol have a great relationship in this film -- before she begins to forget about it all. The wife suffers from Alzheimer's, and the husband goes through everything from self-doubt to extreme frustration.
In Vishal Bhardwaj's superlative adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, Ajay Devgan is married to Kareena Kapoor but the ruffian is wracked with extreme doubt and suspects that she is having an affair with his first mate, played by Vivek Oberoi.
Shah Rukh Khan woos Rani Mukherji and the two get married, only to later grow drastically apart as a drunk Khan stumbles around the house tripping on his own shoes. Much melodrama is doled out to all.
One of the most relatable newlywed movies in a long time, Shaad Ali's Saathiya realistically depicts how the charm of a marriage can wear off soon enough, even though neither Vivek Oberoi or Rani Mukerji can be said to be at fault.
Vishal's first Shakespeare adaptation was of Macbeth. Pankaj Kapoor played a grizzled old don and Tabu starred as his wife. Modelled after Lady Macbeth, ambition leads her to cheat on him and plot his death with Irrfan Khan.
Salman Khan, bored of his relationship with wife Karisma Kapoor, starts seeing the leggy Sushmita Sen, and many short jokes are made. Kapoor wails for a while, after which gentlemanly Anil Kapoor dresses up as a surd to help her make Salman jealous.
In Raj Kanwar's peculiar plot, Anil Kapoor and Sridevi are an unhappily married couple, the wife frustrated at her husband's lack of wealth. Urmila Matondkar enters the scene and offers the material girl much moolah to whisk her husband away -- Sridevi accepts.
This well-performed but maudlin Kramer Vs Kramer remake featured Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala growing apart as a result of their careers and egos, and the film deals with their messy divorce proceedings.
