Mani Ratnam's Yuva has a galaxy of stars -- it is about young men with different viewpoints following different paths and what happens when their paths intersect.

The Performances:

Ajay Devgan as Michael Mukherjee: As the plot's main protagonist, Ajay has a bulk of blows to deliver into the script. This is his most challenging role in years. Angry, bitter and frustrated, and full of rhetoric, he delivers a lean, mean performance.

The only drawback one could see is that he looks too old to be a student.

Abhishek Bachchan as Lallan Singh: One of the best performances of his career. The actor leaves a strong impression despite being pitted against powerful performers like Ajay Devgan and Rani Mukerji. He has some of the toughest scenes in the film.

One onders whether any other actor would have done justice to the role. But Bachchan's expressions, voice and movement bring the character to life. His rugged look seems perfect for the role.

This movie will be the turning point in the career of this talented young man.

Vivek Oberoi as Arjun Balakrishnan: Vivek plays this cool MTV-type youth of today, who believes in enjoying life
and having fun. Vivek looks the character, but his performance is average compared to his co-stars (Ajay and Abhishek).

The actresses don't have major roles to play. But Rani Mukerji seems to be keeping her hand on the pulse of the public, playing her part with the right kind of emotions. Esha Deol gets a role to prove her talent, and she more than lives up to the expectations. She springs a surprise with a restrained performance. Kareena Kapoor is strictly okay. Om Puri and Anant Nag lend adequate support.

The Music:

The name A R Rahman says it all. All the songs are hummable and are picturised beautifully. Anjana and Kabhi neem neem are the pick of the lot.

Ravi K Chandran's cinematography is top class, ditto Sabu Cyril's sets.

Mani Ratnam tells a simple story with impeccable ease and with utmost class.Yuva will undoubtedly be another feather in his cap.

Overall, Yuva is one of the best films released this year with excellent performances, great songs, beautiful visuals and
brilliant direction from Mani Ratnam.

Yuva is a must-see. Go for it.
