Sultan

This is a trailer dripped in testosterone but, for a change, Khan is bringing more than just muscles to the part, feels Raja Sen.

If the Sultan teaser were to run in real time, it wouldn’t last 20 seconds.

As it stands, of course, our first look at this big film comes to us in swaggering, star-struck slow motion.

Dust, thus, flies up in gigantic clouds as feet monumentally land in the ground.

All, it is clear, is meant to be epic, from the sloping breadth of the shoulders to big drops of sweat that take their own time to burst.

The teaser opens with a quote from Sultan Ali Khan, which starts by saying 'wrestling is not a sport,' words the WWE promoter Vince McMahon would certainly agree with. But think not of colourful tights and desi Wrestlemanias, Sultan here is talking about deep internal struggles.

Salman Khan masks are worn by an eager crowd as the Khan exercises in some dark and dusty dungeon, swinging clubs overhead and pulling at weights with a suitably grimaced face.

At some point, he even appears -- to my untrained, ignorant eyes -- to be yanking a pulley that resembles a guillotine.

Khan steps out, scrubs his hands with sand, and spears an opponent rather effortlessly, and it must be said that Salman is bringing some intensity to this character.

The song sounds great, Salman looks good and... well, that’s basically all this trailer holds. For Sallu fans, that’s celebration enough.

Sultan, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, releases on Eid 2016.
