Kannum Kannum is delightful

Manmadha raasa music composer, Dhina has served up a delightful audio treat in the Tamil film Kannum Kannum, directed by Marimuthu, the erstwhile assistant of director Vasanth. Prasanna of Azhagiya Theeyae and Kasthuriman fame stars with Malayalam actress Udayathara. 

The music is by Dhina and also features a song sung by him. Vairamuthu's meaningful and poetic lyrics are one of the high points of this five-track album.

The first track of the album is Pathinettu vayasu, a foot-tapping number with controlled orchestration. Vairamuthu has added punch to his verses with alliterations. Sung by Suchithra, the lyrics speak about the dilemma faced by a modern Tamilian teenage girl who longs to break with tradition. The number has muted percussion with a vague rustic feel and lively, but simple rhythm with no complicated swirls.

Ennayum unnaiyum by Karthik and Chinmayi is a love duet, which starts with a brief doleful raga followed by a collage of changing rhythms and melodious tunes. The song describes the doomed courtship of the lovers.

The solo Anbae anbaethan proves the singing prowess of Dhina. Sung in a laid back fashion, the song is laced with a distinct Ilayaraja flavour. Vairamuthu's excellent lyrics convey how love conquers loneliness. Percussion is aptly underplayed while the flute interludes enhance the melodious texture of the number.

Kutraalam kutraalam by Harish Raghavendra and Malathi is another love duet, which starts with a rustic tenor then gathers momentum with some twists and turns in the rhythm. This folksy number has traces of Ilayaraja's Aayiram thaamarai mottukkalae from Alaigal oyvathillai complete with rhythmic clapping and kulavai by women folk.

Last on the album is Ennannu puriyallaye rendered by Nabarun Gosh. This racy number tells us about the changes brought about by love in a lover's life. This is the only track in the album, which has aggressive percussion.
