K
utty Naduvil's Malayalam film Note Out, starring Nishan (of Rithu fame), Biju Kuttan and Anoop Chandran is a kind of a film that would make you squirm in your seat.

The story takes place at least two decades back. A bunch of useless guys ae shown wasting their time and doing mischief. This gives ample scope for comedy. Then comes a mystery woman, arousing more humour before providing a shocker at the interval.

Post interval, the bunch realises that their supposedly harmless mischief altered someone's life beyond repair and they start treading on the corrective path seeking redemption. It culminates in a 'free for all' fight that ends with the bunch finding a bag full of cash, which will end all their misery.

The bunch led by Pavi (Nishan) includes Bijukuttan, Anoop Chandran, Suraj Venjamoodu and others. The mystery girl is played by Maya (Mithra Kurian).

The screenplay -- credited to the director and Y V Rajesh (who had written Bluff Master inspired Gulumaal for V K Prakash) -- has a few moments of genuine hilarity and mirth. The rest of it just tests our level of endurance. The director, who was a former assistant of V K Prakash, does not engage the audience with the story. There's no technical finesse in the treatment either.

And if you are wondering what is the significance of this peculiar title, go to the theatre to decipher for yourself.

Nishan, who has made a name for himself in Shyamaprasad's Rithu and Sibi Malayil's Apoorvaragam, looks lost in a role that requires him to be loud and over the top.

Mithra has to repeat what performers like Revathy and Urvashi did in the past. But not only is she pale in comparison but her role lacks the core of a leading lady.

Producer Joseph George as the villain in a double role (obviously inspired by Tamil Ghajini) does the jig well.

Kutty Naduvil's directorial debut Note Out will be forgotten very soon.
