WC final delays Shiney's transfer to new jail

April 01, 2011 17:07 IST

Shiney AhujaShiney Ahuja, who was awarded a seven-year jail term for raping his maid, will be shifted from the high security Arthur Road jail in Mumbai after the World Cup final on April 2, a senior police official said today.

'The topic of shifting the actor out of Arthur Road jail has come up for discussion. Due to the World Cup, the decision on where he should be shifted could not be taken,' said an IPS officer on condition of anonymity.

The officer added that the decision on the location where the actor would be shifted could not be taken since the entire force is busy with extensive security arrangements.

'After the final match, we would get our men and then could we escort Ahuja to either Thane Central jail, Pune's Yerwada jail or to Nashik jail," the officer added.

A fast-track court on Wednesday convicted Ahuja for raping his maid although the victim had retracted her statement during the trial. Soon after the verdict was delivered, Shiney's bond that he had furnished earlier was cancelled and he was taken to Arthur Road jail.

Shiney was arrested on June 14, 2009, after the 20-year-old girl lodged a police complaint alleging that she was raped by the actor at his Oshiwara residence. He was released on bail later.

Last September, the maid turned hostile though she identified the actor in the in-camera trial held in the fast-track court saying that the incident had never occurred. The girl told the court that she had filed the complaint against the actor at the behest of the woman who had secured her a job at his residence.
