September 19, 2014 13:59 IST

A scene from Super SangaIt's a double celebration for Kannada superstar Upendra's fans this weekend.

Even as he celebrated his birthday on Thursday, September 18, with his fans, his film Super Ranga, the Kannada version of the Telugu hit Kick, will release today, September 19, across Karnataka.

The much-awaited big budget film, according to director-actor Sadhu Kokila, will reflect the essence of the original.

"The role that Upendra plays in the film suits him perfectly given his penchant for dialogues. The visuals, dances and the dialogues will be a treat for the audience," said director Kokila.

Super Ranga is one of the few Kannada films to be shot extensively in Malaysia.

Kokila, who also plays a key comic role in the film, says the shooting in Malaysia went on for 35 days and two songs were shot in Slovenia.

Upendra worked hard to master the dance steps, he adds.

"We have a song that requires him to change 13 costumes on screen. We have used technology to make this happen. It was a test of Upendra's patience," Kokila says.

Upendra says he got a kick out of doing the film, but admits that he was quite uncomfortable while performing the dances.

Kriti Kharbanda, who is paired opposite Upendra for the first time, is excited about working with Upendra.

"I am confident and hopeful that a lot of people will look at me differently after the release of this film," she said.

The film also stars Priyanka Rao as Kriti's sister, Raghu Mukerjee and Rangayana Raghu.

The music is by Arjun Janya and cinematography by Ashok Kashyap.

Super Ranga is produced by K Manju.
