Radhika Rajamani reviews the Telugu movie Kalyaram Kathi. Post YOUR reviews here.
Kalyanram Kathi is yet another film based on the brother-sister theme explored umpteen times on the silver screen. Director Mallikarjun directs this high-voltage action film which shows the lengths a brother can go to help his sister. In that sense, Mallikarjun doesn't script anything out of the ordinary. Instead he follows the beaten path though in the process he depicts Kalyan Ram as the action hero in all its splendour!
Ramakrishna (Kalyan Ram) and Harita (Saranya Mohan) come from a happy family comprising father (played by Chandra Mohan), two brothers, their wives and children. Ramakrishna dreams of becoming a football player while his father wants him to take up a job. Harita invariably seeks his help all the time.
The film begins when Harita goes missing. She escapes from her husband's Krishna's (Shaam) clutches only to be helped by Ramakrishna. Then it's easy to guess that what follows is a story of revenge, action and also a bit of romance with Anjali (Sana Khan) all interspersed.
There's nothing much to talk about the film -- be it the story or the treatment. The hero is presented as 'superhuman' with cliched storylines and the end result is quite wearisome for the audience to sit through.
There's loads of action, car crashes, gory violence, killing with swords etc in Kalyanram Kathi which is so routine that one is able to assume what comes next. A bit of romance and some songs are thrown in to spice up the film yet it doesn't help much.
Kalyan Ram dons on the action hero avatar and bashes up many in the film including killing with the sword. At the same time he's equally comfortable with dancing. He looks convincing as the brother who goes to any limits to help his sister.
Saranya Mohan is chirpy in the first half and reticent and silently suffering in the second. Handsome Shaam's presence is felt though his role is not too lengthy. Sana Khan adds the glamour element to the film. Kota is at his best again as Shaam's father (filled with vengeance, happy indulging in violence and worried about his reputation). Brahmandam, Venu Madhav and Raghu Babu, who are there to break the endless violent proceedings -- have short screen time. The humour too is limited. Jhansi is perfect as the housemaid and makes her presence felt in a short role.
Since there's so much violence, the special effects are predominant.
Kalyanram Kathi is just another regular commercial film with the typical ingredients.
