The Most Impressive Debuts in Telugu Films, 2013

Of the directors and actors who made their debut in 2013, the following five stood out for their charm, freshness and the new thoughts and ideas they brought to films.

Sudhir Varma

Film: Swamy Ra Ra

Cast: Nikhil Siddharth, Swati

Swamy Ra had good visuals, an interesting screenplay, good acting and sound technical values. First-time director Sudhir Varma ensured that the film was paisa vasool!

Varma made picketing look so cool that one felt like learning the tricks of the trade.

Nikhil and Swati made a good pair and the director ensured the film laughed its way to the box office.

Film: Mirchi

Cast: Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Richa Gangopadhyay

Writer Koratala Siva turned director with Mirchi. He used the regular potboiler ingredients to churn out a successful debut film.

He made Prabhas look dashing with some good styling.

The pretty Nadia Moidu was brought in. Her dignified portrayal as Prabhas’s mother fetched her accolades and a role later in Attarintiki Daaredi.

The film did extremely well at the box office.

Film: Mallela Theeramlo Sirimalle Puvvu

Cast:  Kranthi, Sridivya

This lyrical, poetic film on love directed by Rama Raju had good dialogues and a strong woman protagonist.

It requires guts to make a film like this that is off the beaten path.

The film was critically acclaimed, but would have made its producers happier had it also been a commercial success. 

 Film: Venkatadri Express

Cast: Brahmaji, Sundeep Kishan, Rakulpreet Singh

Director Merlapaka Gandhi made a mark with this, his very first film.

The movie was fun, despite having a serious and clichéd theme.

The father-son relationship came to the fore here as the father threatens to expel his son (played by Sundeep Kishan) from home when he commits his 100th mistake.

Gandhi shows promise with this effort, especially in the narrative style he used.

Sundeep Kishan delivered a good performance in a film that won critical acclaim too. 

Film: Uyyala Jampala

There was a freshness to the film that came from having new actors, a good director and script.

The innocence of the characters and environment made it a treat to watch.

This small film had big people such as Akkineni Nagarjuna and D Suresh Babu backing it, along with Rammohan P.

Actor Raj Tharun gave a natural and spontaneous performance that was much appreciated.

So was Punarnavi’s performance. She played the friend of the main protagonist.

Vishwa DB’s camera work was captivating and the whole film had the authentic feel of Coastal Andhra.
