Shobha Warrier in Chennai
Prasanna is not the typical young Tamil hero and the films he chooses to act in are also not the kind that elevate actors to heroes, such as Azhagiya Theeye, Achamundu Achamundu, Anjathey and Muran.
This weekend, he acts in a comedy. Kalyana Samayal Sadham directed by debutant director, Prasanna R S. The film is co-produced by Arun Vaidyanathan (who directed Prasanna in Achamundu Achamundu).
In this interview, Prasanna talks about the big fat south Indian wedding feast that is Kalyana Samayal Sadham.
What attracted you to Kalyana Samayal Sadham?
The comedy in the script instantly excited me. Also, the realism in the story. I was able to connect to a lot of incidents in the film.
I am sure anybody who watches this film will connect to it, especially those who are about to get married or who have just got married.
There is a surprise element in the film which made me a little apprehensive. I am not sure whether it will be accepted by all.
I felt it was very bold of the director to come up with such a script and that I should take it up.
'Having got married recently, I was able to relate to a lot of incidents in the film'
Image: A scene from Kalyana Samayal SadhamWas it fun acting in the film?
It was pure fun on the sets. We used to burst out laughing after we finished a scene especially if it had Delhi Ganesh and Crazy Mohan in it!
There are a couple of newcomers who act as my friends in the film, and they are really hilarious. There were also a lot of naughty moments while shooting.
How much could you identify with the character?
Having got married recently, I was able to relate to a lot of incidents in the film.
As there is nothing cinematic in the script, all of us could identify with the characters and situations.
That is why I feel anybody who is married can relate to the script.
You need good timing for comedy. Was it easy for you to act in a comedy?
I didn't have any problem acting in the comedy scenes with the newcomers or veterans like Delhi Ganesh and Crazy Mohan.
Though we used to rehearse a lot, there was a lot of improvisation while shooting.
'Arranged marriages are'nt old fashioned'
Image: A scene from Kalyana Samayal SadhamThough the protagonists are modern, they agree to an arranged marriage. Do you approve of arranged marriages? Yours was not one.
I wouldn't say arranged marriages are old fashioned or not done, but today's youngsters prefer to know their partners better before getting into a commitment.
This film is about two youngsters who meet on a matrimonial site and as both families are happy, they arrange an engagement. What happens after that is what the film is all about.
The film also shows the differences between the modern generation and the older generation regarding wedding rituals. But it’s all said in a fun way.
How was R S Prasanna as a director?
He was very clear even at the script stage. There was no confusion on the sets. The only confusion was our names!
Arun (Vaidyanathan) has been a big driving force behind all of us, and he is the reason behind the film. He used to talk about the story even before it became a bound script.
'I am really looking forward to the release to the release of the film'
Image: A scene from Kalyana Samayal SadhamAre you looking forward to the release of the film?
The first song we released on YouTube was a huge hit and it became viral. It was a very good beginning for the film.
I am really looking forward to the release as it is quite a while since the first copy was ready.
The new campaign started by Arun Vaidyanathan on Facebook asking everyone to post their wedding pictures, is a huge hit. Have you also posted your wedding pictures?
By asking others to share their wedding and feast pictures, we want them to go back to their wedding day. That is why we started this campaign.
I had not posted any of our wedding pictures on Facebook as my wife Sneha is also an actor and I have to think of her privacy.
But now I have decided to post our wedding picture where we exchange garlands. Now, all our friends are posting their wedding pictures!
