Ranjith Sankar’s Punyalan Agarbathis, Jis Joy’s Bicycle Thieves and Rajesh Nair’s Escape from Uganda are the main releases of the week.
Here is a closer look at the three films.
Punyalan Agarbathis
Director: Ranjith Sankar
Cast: Jayasurya, Nyla Usha
Passenger director Ranjith Sankar is ready with a comedy, Punyalan Agarbathis that has a relevant social message.
Jayasurya (who is co-producing the film with Ranjith Sankar) plays a young wannabe entrepreneur named Joy Thakkolkkaran. He is trying to make his own mark in life, but with limited success.
Nyla Usha, who made her debut with Kunjananthante Kada, plays the female lead. Innocent, Edavela Babu, Aju Varghese and Sreejith Ravi are in supporting roles.
Punyalan Agarbathis has been produced by Dreams N’ Beyond. Sujith Vasudev is the cinematographer and Biji Bal scores the music.
Director: Jis Joy
Cast: Asif Ali, Aparna Gopinath
Dubbing artiste and ad filmmaker Jis Joy turns director with a suspense thriller titled Bicycle Thieves, which has no connection with the Vittorio De Sica classic of the same name.
This is about the gang of Chacko (Asif Ali), Bose Prakash (Salim Kumar), Rameshan (Saiju Kurup) and Rahim (Bineesh Kodiyeri), who steal bicycles for a living.
Their theory is that people tend to be less bothered to search if they lose a chappal or a bicycle. But things go wrong when they become greedy and try to steal more valuable things.
Chennai based dancer and theatre artiste Aparna Gopinath, who made a successful debut in Malayalam with ABCD, plays a bank employee named Meera.
Bicycle Thieves has been produced by Dharmik Films. Binendra Menon is the cinematographer. Deepak Dev scores the music.
Director: Rajesh Nair
Cast: Rima Kallingal, Parthiban, Mukesh
In debutant director Rajesh Nair’s Escape from Uganda, Rima Kallingal plays Shikha Samuel, who is trying to start a life in Uganda.
She lands in trouble with the legal system there and tries to flee the country. The film is about her struggles.
Rima says she agreed to do the film the moment she heard the script. “It was wonderful working in the African country with some of the artistes there who have worked in a few Hollywood productions.”
Escape from Uganda has been produced by Vaya Films and River Nile Motion Pictures. Vishnu Sharma is the cinematographer and Varun Unni is the music director.
