Reactions continue to pour in over the Film Federation of India’s decision to send The Good Road to Oscars.
Film critic Rajeev Masand recalled a similar incident when Aamir Khan’s Lagaan was picked over Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding.
‘I remember in 2002, Lagaan was picked over Monsoon Wedding as India's entry to the Oscars. Mira Nair had said she was disappointed bec MW had an advantage over any other film since it had won at Venice and had major festival buzz and was the darling of the international press. Aamir Khan, upset at Mira's statements, said it was arrogant of Mira to think no other filmmaker/film (from India) could mount a successful Oscar campaign. And we all know how he pushed and drove Lagaan into the consciousness of Oscar voters, which resulted in the film finding a place in the final shortlist. One only hopes The Good Road can and will do that. If it can't, it will forever be remembered as the film that wasted an opportunity that The Lunchbox might have better exploited,’ Masand wrote.
Meanwhile, author Shobhaa De slammed chief of the jury Goutam Ghose and tweeted: ‘So, what exactly is Goutam Ghose saying? That he gorged on the Lunchbox but his jury found it less appeasing?’
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta added: ‘Dear Mr. Ghosh, films submitted to the Oscars are not supposed to showcase the country but the cinema of the country. If the selection committee's criteria is films showcasing India, then they should be sending the tourism ads for the Oscars.'
