Review: Dil Dhadakne Do music is average

Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar in Dil Dhadakne DoOverall, the music of Dil Dhadakne Do doesn't come close to that of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, writes Aelina Kapoor.

Director Zoya Akhtar joins hands with dad Javed Akhtar and their favourite composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for the soundtrack of her next film Dil Dhadakne Do.

Dil Dhadakne Do, starring Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah, is set on a cruise liner.

Priyanka and Farhan come together behind the mike for the title song Dil Dhadakne Do. This one could well be the next karaoke favourite.

Both actors sing it with the kind of attitude suited to their characters in the film.

Newcomer Sukriti Kakkar and Siddharth Mahadevan come together for Pehli Baar. The song has a good beat, but isn’t catchy. Despite playing it in loop four or five times, one can’t recollect the core tune after a while.

There’s something to sing and dance about when Yashita Sharma and Sukhwinder Singh lead the charge in the catchiest song of the soundtrack, Gallan Goodiyaan.

All credit to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy that even with a Punjabi setting, they don't let the song get trapped in the usual bhangra mode.

The treatment is classy, with Farhan and Shankar Mahadevan chipping in. Manish Kumar Tipu, though, could have been dispensed with.

The trusted Sunidhi Chauhan is roped in for Girls Like To Swing. The Hinglish number needs someone very talented behind the mike. Sunidhi’s presence takes the album up many notches. It has the feel of a jingle and one can expect some vibrant action on screen when this fun number plays.

The last number, Phir Bhi Yeh Zindagi is, like Pehli Baar, difficult to recall.

Despite a horde of singers -- Farhan Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani, Divya Kumar, Alyssa Mendonsa and Sapna Pathak -- the song makes no impact as a standalone track. It may have a place in the scheme of the film, though, if Dil Dhadakne Do has a long stay in the theatres.

Overall, the music of Dil Dhadakne Do doesn't come close to that of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Zoya's earlier film.

However, the music of the earlier film wasn’t immediately popular. So, we should give this Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy score the benefit of the doubt and see whether it does better once the film hits the screens.
