Irrfan Khan's Madaari based on real life incident

Nishikant Kamat's directorial venture Madaari stars Irrfan Khan as a man, who seeks non-legal redress for a Metro bridge that comes crashing down in a busy part of Mumbai.

Kamat admits that the film is based on the collapse of an under-construction Metro bridge in Andheri, in the western suburb of Mumbai, which happened on September 4, 2012.

But the filmmaker says the real-life accident was just the triggering point for the plot.

"Madaari is about an under-construction Metro bridge, which fell a couple of years back in Andheri, Mumbai. The incident is just a backdrop. My film is plotted around the repercussions of this incident," he says.

"If you recollect my 2008 film Mumbai Meri Jaan, that was also based on the backdrop of a tragic catastrophe: the Mumbai train bombings on July 11, 2006.

"But the film was about human emotions. As usual, my attempt is to explore the complexities created by an unfortunate event," says the National award winning director.

The director, whose last release was Rocky Handsome, has made films like Dombivli Fast and Lai Bhaari in Marathi earlier, as well as the Hindi version of Drishyam.

Madaari will release on June 10.
