KBC winner skipped SRK show

January 23, 2007 15:40 IST

The only one to actually make it from the KBC hotseat with a crore, Harshwardhan Nawathe from the game show had no time to see Shah Rukh Khan's KBC when it was aired on Monday night.

Nawathe, a resident of east Mumbai suburb Ghatkopar was busy in his work and didn't get time to watch King Khan's KBC.

"I have moved on. I have my busy life today and I could not make it on time at home to watch television. So I missed it," he told rediff.

Nawathe, till date, is the only contestant on the KBC show to win the jackpot by winning Rs 1 crore on the show.

He won the jackpot on October 11, 2000 that happened to be Amitabh Bachchan's 58th birthday. Nawathe's programme was telecast on October 19, 2000 and he was 26 at the time. He was studying to appear for the Indian Administrative Service exam when he won the prize.

Until Nawathe's win, the highest any contestant won was Rs 50 lakhs, when R C Dubey, a Calcutta shopkeeper, answered 14 questions.

Soon

after winning the programme Nawathe went into hiding because of sudden fame, and it was some time before he gave media interviews. A year after winning the programme, he moved to London for further studies and returned to India last year.

Without revealing much about his personal life except stating that he is working for a financial institution, Nawathe said, "It always feels good to be the only winner of Rs 1 crore till date. However, I am sure as time goes on there will be others who will win 1 crore and even more than that." The top prize money is now Rs 2 crore.

Asked about his opinion on Shah Rukh, Nawate said, "Shah Rukh has his own style in films and so does Mr Bachchan. I am sure he would be great on the show. It is wrong to compare both of them. I have not seen Shah Rukh's show, but I am sure he would be a good anchor, because he is a fabulous actor."

Interview: From Big B's hotseat to SRK's

Nawathe is more upset with mediapersons who want to keep him in the public glare. "I am not a celebrity or a sportsman to be in news all the time. The winning prize was one of the best moments of my life, but I have to look at my future. It is history now as that happened six years ago. I don't want attention all the time. I want to lead a life of a normal person."

"I have spoken everything I had to say in my interviews and therefore I keep off from media. The media attention gives me a lot of trouble in life; I get disturbed in my routine life. There is nothing rude or being arrogant, but I cannot let my life today suffer because of KBC," added Nawathe.
