Kolkata begins the year on a sad note.
National Award-winning film director Mrinal Sen, 95, passed away into the ages on Sunday, December 30.
His funeral -- held at Keoratala Ghat, Kolkata, on Tuesday, January 1 -- was attended by prominent members of the Bengali film industry.
The streets of Kolkata were swarming with fans of the late director, as they tried to get a last glimpse of their idol.

Among those who attended the funeral were actors Prosenjit, Nandita Das, Madhabi Mukherjee and Mamata Shankar, directors Tarun Majumdar and Anjan Dutt, as well as Satyajit Ray's son Sandip Ray.
The Padma Bhushan awardee, best known for films like Neel Akasher Neechey, Bhuvan Shome, Ek Din Achanak, Padatik and Mrigayaa, was one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of the country and an ambassador of parallel cinema.
