Talented Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh passed away around 7.30 am today, May 30. He was 49.
Ghosh was reportedly suffering from pancreatitis.
Born and brought up in Kolkata, the maverick filmmaker started his career in advertising. His first film was Hirer Angti (Diamond ring) in 1994.
He got a National Award for Best Director for his Bengali film Abohoman (2010), starring Jishu Sengupta, Ananya Chatterjee, Dipankar Dey and Mamata Shankar.
He had directed Aishwarya Rai in two Hindi films, Chokher Bali and Raincoat. He also directed Amitabh Bachchan and Preity Zinta in The Last Lear.
His last release was Chitrangada (2012).
Ghosh last tweeted yesterday: 'Wrapped up the shoot of Satyanewshi, a crime thriller in the molten glow of the pensive falling afternoon.'
Ghosh was a popular face on television as well and hosted two celebrity chat shows, Ebong Rituporno on ETV Bangla and Ghosh and co. on Star Jalsha.
He was the scriptwriter of Gaaner Opare.
He completed his schooling from South Point High School and studied Economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
