January 18, 2010, 9:31: Avatar sits just 200-some million dollars from topping Titanic as the highest grossing movie of all time. This win will likely propel it to the top spot, along with Academy Awards success. Take a bow, James Cameron. You really are a Hollywood legend.
January 18, 2010, 9:30: Well, for the $250 million official budget (which was actually much higher, rumours have it), Cameron was expected to deliver the goods with Avatar. He did. And how.
January 18, 2010, 9:29: Winning best director and best film really bodes well for Cameron's chances at the upcoming Academy Awards. Difficult to imagine anyone unseating him at this point. Still, no film will be able to replicate the success of Slumdog Millionaire last year.

From the absolute brink of self-destruction to three hits in a year and a half (Ironman, Tropic Thunder Sherlock Holmes). And this year he's beaten top acts like Damon (The Informant) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who many thought would win. Congrats, Robert.

January 18, 2010, 9:8: Sandra Bullock wins for her work in the The Blind Side! Well deserved, well deserved. The film has been a hit with audiences, with good reason. She was also nominated for the same award in the Comedy or Musical category, for The Proposal. Talk about one busy leading lady!

January 18, 2010, 9:5: California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger gives us a clip from Avatar, and jokes that money for the film is being used to keep his state's budget afloat. (California is really, really, really broke)
January 18, 2010, 8:58: "The Hangover" wins for Best Film (Comedy or Musical), in a bit of a surprise. The movie did fabulously in India, as it did everywhere, but it's hard to imagine the HFPA falling for all the toilet humor and 'bromance' elements. Anyhow, it's good to see a film that didn't take itself too seriously being feted. Again, I don't think the filmmakers had this in mind when they started out! A Golden Globe? Really!?!?
January 18, 2010, 8:54: Hard to believe that Glee bested three of televisions most witty and intelligent comedies: The Office (which admittedly dragged a little this year), Modern Family (which burst onto the scene in a blaze of belly laughs), and 30 Rock (which is just pure comedic gold, really) Glee is a bit implausible and impractical, but a surefire winner in a 'safe but not outstanding' kind of way. Would probably do well in an Indian context.
January 18, 2010, 8:51: Wow. "Glee" has just won Best Television Series - Comedy Or Musical, beating out stalwarts in the genre like 30 Rock, Modern Family and The Office. Again, unbelievable!
January 18, 2010, 8:49: This makes Cameron even more of a favourite at the upcoming Academy Awards. Much like Danny Boyle last year, Cameron's success at the GG's likely means big things for the AA's.
January 18, 2010, 8:46: And, to be honest, while Avatar was perhaps a bit hampered by a humdrum story, its presentation and execution were borderline flawless. It's hard to think that cinema will ever be the same, after the 3-D experience Cameron invited us for.

January 18, 2010, 8:44: Gervais cracks on Mel Gibson, who famously shouted bigoted slurs while being arrested for Driving while intoxicated. Gervais: 'I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the man is Mel Gibson.' Hahahah! Gibson is on to present the Best Director (Feature Film) ward.

January 18, 2010, 8:25: Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio now on stage to present lifetime achievement award to Martin Scorsese. If there's one man in cinema who deserves a lifetime achievement award, Scorsese would certainly be in the running.

January 18, 2010, 8:11: "Mad Men" wins for Best Series Drama. Matthew Weiner accepts, with cast. A lot of competition, with House, Dexter, Big Love and True Blood up against it, but Mad Men carries the day. Not surprising for a show with 9 Emmys and a handful of Golden Globes!

January 18, 2010, 7:56: ...Up In The Air, George Clooney-starrer, brings home the award for Best Screenplay. Wow! Wasn't expecting this. Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, the writers, are graceful in their acceptance speech, and effusively praise novelist Walter Kirn, whose book helped inspire the story, and George Clooney, who brought their vision to life. Well deserved, guys!

January 18, 2010, 7:32: Uber-hunk Colin Farrell to present Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical... And the winner is... Meryl Streep! The Legend has done it again, this time for her fine performance in "Julia & Julia." She accepts with characteristic grace.
January 18, 2010, 7:30: Just a brief aside, to mention the legend of Meryl Streep. Most in show business would kill for a single Best Actress nomination as a leading award show. For two nominations at the SAME event? Who knows what they'd do. For Meryl, who excels in both "Julie & Julia," and “It’s Complicated,” this is nothing new.

Small budget “(500) Days of Summer,” uproarious crowd pleaser “The Hangover,” Meryl Streep’s “Julie & Julia” and “It’s Complicated,” and the heavily panned musical “Nine”. Only time will tell!

It’s wide open, but many believe “Up in the Air,” “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” have the best chances.

He’s known for his acerbic wit and uncompromising attitude towards celebs – while many treat them with kid-gloves, he goes straight for the throat. He's promised to bring the pain this year, and has warned any celebrities not to cry if they win an award. Else, they risk facing his wrath!
