However, Cheran soon realised that talent alone was not sufficient to be an actor. After a lot of deliberation, he decided to try his hand at story-writing and film direction as he wanted to use cinema as a medium to reach thousands of villages.
He made films that are rural-based like Bharathi Kannamma and Porkkalam. They were huge commercial successes but his third film Desiya Geetham, which exposed the stinking political scene in India, was not well received at the box office.
