Veteran musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika is ill and undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private nursing home in Guwahati.
The Dada Saheb Phalke Award-winning singer complained of uneasiness while on stage at a Bihu function, at the Noonmati area of the city last night. He was admitted to Guwahati Neurological Research Institute (GNRC) at around 2 am today.
Dr Numal Chandra Bora of the GNRC said the 80-year old singer suffered a 'mild cerebral attack' and appeared to be having a 'slight' heart problem. However, his condition was reported to be stable. "He is responding to treatment well. He will be under constant observation for the next 72 hours, during which a series of tests will be undertaken," the doctor said.
Fans thronged the hospital to inquire about Hazarika's health. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also called on the artiste. Hazarika happens to be Assam's most decorated artiste, having carved a niche for himself nationally, as well as in the Hindi film industry.
