Alexander, abiding by his father's dying words, proceeded to literally rule the world. Taking over the royal reins at 20, he traipsed across the globe so gloriously that he took a common epithet and made it proper: he earned the exclusive right to be Great.

Hollywood has also proved puny for Alexander; the Great did not make notable celluloid appearances owing to his inexpressible grandeur. Until now.

Aided by CGI and budgets in excess of $200 million, Alexander finally beckoned Hollywood, which went wild with the concept of the ultimate legend, the supreme hero of all time.

However, as with all Hollywood concepts, there is no clear direction. Which is why two filmmakers jumped aboard two different versions of the Macedon king's life and times and started work with great gusto.
