'Mehmood often earned more than heroes'

Lata Khubchandani | July 27, 2004 01:26 IST

JeetendraJeetendra pays tribute to his 'bhaijaan' Mehmood, who died on July 23.

Mehmood was a great friend and actor. We used to call him bhaijaan.

I think the first time we met was during the shoot of Gunahon Ka Devta (1967). We were shooting in Kashmir and he would be laughing and joking all the time. That put us at ease.

Prem Chopra and I worked with him a lot. You know, he was such a favourite with distributors that he often earned more than heroes did. Filmmakers would add a parallel track with him in the film to make it more saleable. He was sure to have a couple of songs in every film.

Audiences loved him and that's why he became the USP of every film.

I did at least 15 films with him and enjoyed working with him.
