Taal (1999)
After Sanjay Leela Bhansali's hit film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Taal strengthened Ash's standing in the industry. She was now accepted as an actress, instead of just being touted as a beautiful face.
Music maestro A R Rahman joined hands with Ghai for the first time and made wonderful music. The song Ishq bina kya jeena yaaro was actually to feature in Ghai's Shikhar (1997), but the film was shelved.
Taal, which did not appeal to the Indian audience, did very well in the US and went on to feature in the US Top 20.
Ghai began focussing his attention on the NRI audience in his later films. His next venture Yaadein, considered one of his worst ever films in India, was one of the highest-grossing Hindi films in the US.
