Denys Arcand joins the official competition in Cannes with The Barbarian Invasions. The entire cast, including Dominique Michel, Dorothee Berryman, Louise Portal and Marie-Josee Croze, accompanied the Canadian filmmaker.

The film about Rémi (played by Canadian actor Remy Girard), a middle-aged divorcee and former swinger who is terminally ill in hospital, brought tears to the eyes of festival-goers.

At the festival, Arcand stated, "I don't know why, but this movie is very sad. It is the magic of sadness. I remember one scene where I couldn't help but break down in tears."
