Rituparno Ghosh to direct AB

M Chhaya in Kolkata | June 17, 2003 17:15 IST

Rituparno Ghosh will direct Amitabh Bachchan soon.

The award-winning Bengali filmmaker's story is about a famous father and his not-so-famous son who takes up his dad's calling, but fails to make it.

Bengali actor-turned-producer Prosenjit Chatterjee's production company Golden Moments will produce the as-yet-untitled film.

Ghosh, who has just finished the Aishwarya Rai-starrer Choker Bali, first thought of making the film in Bengali, but later decided to make it in Hindi for a wider audience.

"The month-long winter shoot is being planned in Kolkata and Darjeeling," said Chatterjee, who met Bachchan along with Ghosh in Mumbai in May.

Ghosh, who is not comfortable with Hindi, will take lyricist Javed Akhtar's help to write the script.

Ghosh said he has been reflecting on this story idea for a long time: Is it a curse for a son to be born to famous parents and take up their profession? And the only person he could think of for the father's part was Bachchan, "the cinematic symbol of a successful patriarch".

Deepti Naval will feature as Bachchan's wife and Akshaye Khanna as his son. Tabu could also feature in the film.
