'If people can accept Jism and The Guru, they will accept Oops too'

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Mumbai | February 10, 2003 15:16 IST

Actor-producer Deepak Tijori recently completed his first directorial venture Oops! based on male strippers.

Tijori acknowledges the phenomenon exists in Indian society, but adds his film also has "moral values."

Shot in English and Hindi in 44 days on a Rs 2.5 crore budget, it is slated for an April 25 release. Oops! stars Mita Vashisht, Mink Singh and newcomers Kiran Janjani, Vikas Sethi and Adyahsa.

Says Tijori, "The new cast gives the film a fresh look. If I had taken known actors, they would have not been accepted as male strippers by the audience."

Asked if such a subject would be accepted by Indian audiences, Tijori claims, "Of course it will. India has changed drastically in the last 10 years. If people can accept Jism and The Guru, they will accept this film too."

Vashisht, who plays a major part in the film, refuses to discuss her role, only saying, "I play a rich socialite. I am a surprise package so I will not disclose any more."

Asked if she found it difficult to shoot the film in two languages, she replied, "There were some difficulties. Each time I had to give the first take in Hindi and the second in English. So I did two films at a time!"

Oops! is about three friends -- Jahaan (Janjani), Aakash (Sethi) and Nikki (Adyahsa) -- who are dancers. "In their journey to make it big in life, they all land in a situation which is Oops!" explains Tijori.

Playing a stripper embarrassed Janjani initially, but things fell into place eventually. "I told myself no matter what role I play, I must remember acting is acting. I must do my duty," he says.
