The Rediff Special
Contrary to what you might think, enough hasn't been said about Lata Mangeshkar.
There are those, of course, who would say that talk is cheap. Words, after all, are just words.
There are those who would say that only a voice like hers could, perhaps, pay a fitting tribute to Lata Mangeshkar.
Truth is, there isn't one.
Naushad, Hindi cinema's oldest living composer, hit just the right note when he said that Lata Mangeshkar's voice has a mithaas (sweetness) that no other singer has. Perhaps no other singer ever will.
But we can certainly express our appreciation. Of the Voice.
As she turns 71 (and she is said to have confessed that she feels as young as the digits reversed), ours is to rejoice.
To live amidst this legend is occasion enough to celebrate, wouldn't you say?
