According to Wikipedia, it is a 1.3 GHz dual core processor manufactured by Samsung. Apple claims it is twice as fast and has up to twice the graphic power compared to its predecessor that was used in Apple iPhone 5.
The 64-bit chip is also makes iPhone the fastest smartphone in the world, according to Anand Shimpi's blog AnandTech.
Shimpi compared the iPhone 5S CPU with others and the result were surprising. He used various browser benchmark tests to measure the CPU performance. Also, Intel's Bay Trail FFRD and Qualcomm's MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 MDP/T are used only for reference, as these platforms are test tablets.

During the unveiling event of iPhone 5S and 5C, Apple mentioned that the A7 offers performance comparable to a desktop.
Many experts are contemplating on Apple’s move to launch a 64-bit A7 processor, as they don’t think that it is just a gimmick to show that iPhones are faster than other smartphones. Rather, reviewers believe that Apple has used the powerful processor with an eye on the future.
Some believe that this chip will allow the company to use more than 4GB of memory (RAM), which is not possible today.
Many also believe that Apple will unify iOS with Mac OS. Which means, Apple will be able to bring the million plus apps for its desktop and Mac OS features to iPhones.
