West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday skipped the Confederation of Indian Industry’s national council meeting as she was busy with the last rites of legendary actress Suchitra Sen who passed away on Friday.
However, the chief minister made up for her absence by addressing the gathering via state Industry and Finance Minister Amit Mitra’s mobile phone.

Banerjee profusely apologised for her inability to attend the event, according to a member present at the closed-door meeting.
Banerjee and Mitra urged the industrialists to come up with more projects in the state and assured them of all support from the government.
Sen had been hospitalised for over three weeks.
Mamata was in constant touch with Sen’s doctors and used to be a daily visitor at the hospital.

S Gopalakrishnan, vice-chairman of Infosys and CII president, was present at the meeting along with other industrialists such as Sanjiv Goenka, Sumit Mazumder among others.
“She has reiterated her commitment to the industry.
Also, she has assured to extend all kinds of help to organise CII international conference next year,” Goenka said. The conference will be organised on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of CII.
