The Nissan Terrano has just been launched in Chennai and this event is also the national launch of the vehicle.

Nissan India’s CEO, Mr. Kenichiro Yomura, has also handed over the keys of the car to its first customer.

During media interaction Yomura informed that the SUV has already managed 6,000 bookings across India during its prelaunch. This makes the Terrano, one of the most-awaited car.

The Terrano is available with the 1.6-litre petrol engine outputting 104PS or the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine producing 85PS or 110PS.

While the 85PS diesel and the petrol variant get a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 110PS diesel gets a 6-speed manual transmission.

In short, the Terrano features the same engine line-up as the Renault Duster.

Based on the Renault Duster platform, the Terrano was designed at Nissan’s Yokohoma design studio in Japan and was developed at the Renault-Nissan technology centre in Chennai, India.

Nissan has restyled the exteriors of the Terrano to better differentiate it from the Duster. The headlights, taillights, grille, bumpers, and the boot lid are completely redesigned.

Inside, the Terrano gets a new steering wheel, rectangular aircon vents (as compared to the Duster’s circular vents) and a new music system.

However, the Terrano misses out on steering mounted audio controls.

Surprisingly, Nissan will be offering a third row seat as part of the optional accessories. Though this is not an adult seat, it should suffice for small kids for short distances.

Coming to the gadgetry, the Terrano comes with a reverse parking sensor with an integrated display on the rear view mirror.

We guess that the integrated display will also house the tripmeter and would come with an automatic day/night function.

Nissan also offers audio controls that strap into the steering wheel. The controls are grouped on a remote and a strap attaches the remote to the inner circumference of the wheel. Parts such as door mirrors with blinkers and illuminated door sills have also been developed.

Nissan had commenced the pre-booking of the Terrano on September 1.Interested customers could book the car by paying an advance of Rs 50,000. As it turns out, there were about 6,000 such interested customers.

Nissan is currently making 3,000 Terranos every month. As a result, customers booking their car on the launch day will have to wait for about two months before they can take delivery.

Based on these numbers, it seems that the Terrano could be the best cross-badged Renault-Nissan product out there (considering that the Renault Scala and Pulse haven’t really made a serious sales impact for Renault in India).

One of the reasons for these bookings (though they’re initial booking figures) can be attributed to the way Nissan has segmented the Terrano: Even the base model is available with a driver airbag as standard.
