German luxury car major Mercedes-Benz launched the all new A-Class in the compact segment at an introductory price of Rs 21,93 lakh (Rs 2.19 million) for the petrol variant and Rs 22.73 lakh (Rs 2.27 million) for diesel, ex-showroom Mumbai.
The variant allocated for India, the A180 Sport, is powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol motor which develops 120.7 bhp and 200 Nm of torque.
The motor accelerates the car from 0-100 kph in 9.2 seconds before attaining a top speed of 202 kph. Fuel economy stands at 15.5 kmpl.

The diesel variant is named as the A180 Style. Power comes from the 2.2 litre engine, which also powers the C Class, but detuned to produce 107.2 bhp.
As a trade off, the oil burner offers a commendable mileage of 20.06 kmpl. The car reaches triple digit speed from rest in 10.6 seconds and has a top speed of 190 kph.
Both the engines are mated to 7G-DCT 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmissions with paddle shifters. Start/Stop system is a standard feature.

Dimensionally, the A Class measures 4.29m long, 1.78m wide and 1.43m tall. The petrol version weighs 1,395 kg while the diesel version weighs 1,505 kg.
Boot space stands at 341 litre and can be extended to 1,157 litre by folding the 60:40 split seats.

The A Class comes with safety and comfort features such as seven airbags, ESC, Acceleration Skid Control, tire pressure warning system, Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist and Electronic Parking Brake. The Bi-Xenon headlamp unit is complemented by LED daytime running lights.
There are only three exterior colour options earmarked for India namely Jupiter Red, Cirrus White and Polar Silver Metallic.

Globally, the A-Class has been a run-away success with over 90,000 bookings within months of the launch. The A-Class also comes with service packages like 'star ease' and 'star care'.
Announcing the launch, Mercedes-Benz India managing director and chief executive Eberhard Kern said, "2013 is the year of offensive for Merc India and the A-Class launch reiterates our promise of bringing the most fascinating cars for our valued customers."
