Auto recalls are no longer a foreign concept now. They are becoming commonplace events in India of late. There has been space of recalls in the past two-three months.

General Motors and Toyota are well-know for recalling their vehicles regularly but domestic manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, too, seems to have joined the bandwagon.

The company went for one of the biggest vehicle recalls in the country on April 11. Maruti admitted faulty part with 103,311 units of Ertiga, Swift, and DZire.

Maruti Suzuki India

Maruti Suzuki, the most trusted brand in India is likely to recall over 150,000 units of Swift Dzire models manufactured in 2013-14.

According to recent media reports, Maruti Suzuki would recall large number of Swift Dzire compact sedans due to faulty fuel pump components.

Currently, Maruti Suzuki is replacing the faulty fuel component in unsold units and it is likely to recall the sold units very soon.

Just a few months back, company recalled 1,492 units of Eritiga, Swift hatchback, Dzire and A-Star with regard to mistake in the steering column which was serviced for free.

However, company hasn’t issued an official statement but if it recalls this large number of cars, it could be the largest auto recall in the history of Indian automobile industry for a specific model.

Also it could be a blow to the company where, in last fiscal year 13-14, its compact sedan Dzire recorded a total sales of 197,685 units, a straight 16 per cent increment from the fiscal year 2012-13.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors

Toyota has been facing severe criticism for so many years of being the brand with one of the largest number of recalls in the auto industry.

With regards to this, Toyota Kirloskar Motors India recently announced to recall its faulty units of Innova car manufactured during February 2005 to December 2008.

The automaker will repair defective spiral cable mounted on the steering wheel that leads to false blinking of airbag warning lamp on the instrument cluster.

This can further leads to potential safety hazard and finally the deactivation of driver’s airbag.

The mistake according to company is estimated to be sorted out within an hour and will be serviced free of cost.

The company is currently arranging necessary replacement parts that are once available, the concerned customers will be contacted shortly by the authorities.

The US automaker last year in September recalled 166,021 units of its popular Figo hatchback and Classic sedan models.

The cars manufactured during January 2010 to June 2012 were recalled to rectify problems with the power assisted steering (PAS) hose and rear suspension system.

The possible fault at the rear axle might affect the ride, handling and braking system of the vehicle.

Company conducted necessary inspection and also stated that it haven’t received any complaints or reports of injury for the two faulty parts yet, but the car would be thoroughly scrutinised and if necessary, then parts will be replaced.

This recall was the eight major recall of the company in India in the same year, which was the highest in single year of time span.

General Motors India

Recalling could be termed as synonymous to General Motors but in India it hasn’t gone to that extent.

The major vehicle recall announcement was done last year of Chevrolet Tavera to address issues related to emissions and specifications.

GM India recalled 114,000 units of its popular MPV Tavera which became one of the biggest recalls in the country.

The vehicles manufactured between 2005 and 2013 were voluntarily recalled by the company and were to be repaired free of charge at the 280 dealers across the country.

Prior to announcement, the carmaker halted the production of Tavera and promised to resume the production as soon as the issues were rectified.

Japanese auto giant Nissan was also not immune to this recall trend. The same last year Nissan Motor India, the wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese carmaker, recalled 22,188 units of small hatch Micra and Sunny sedan on account of fault in the braking system.

The recalling was a part of global exercise and was applicable on the vehicles manufactured between June 2012 and March 2013 period.

However, company did not receive any complaints from the consumers in India. It was just a precautionary measure for the safety of customers.

From Indian perspective, most of the recalls are not a result of severe injuries and deaths, but a precautionary measure to avoid loss of life and property.
