Information Technology giant Wipro would start its research and development project in Goa and the state government has already earmarked a land for the project, Goa's Information and Technology Minister, Dayanand Narvekar said on Wednesday.

One lakh square metre of land, has been earmarked in the Goa University campus at Donapaula, adjacent to the IT Habitat planned by the state government, Narvekar said.

He said senior personnel from Wipro have met him and Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane and have expressed their interest to start the project in Goa.

"We have decided to give land to Wipro as it is a big name in IT sector and other smaller companies would rotate around Wipro to make Goa an IT destination," Narvekar said. Allocation of land for companies at IT Habitat, planned at Donapaula, would start from next month.

"IT Habitat will comprise companies with IT-enabled services which will generate employment to local youth. IT Habitat is expected to generate employment for 10,000 youth in the state", Narvekar said.

The minister said the companies intending to start their project in IT Habitat would be charged Rs 2,500 per square metre of land in addition to Rs 1,200 to 1,500 per square metre as infrastructure development charges.
