Wincor Nixdorf International GmbH, the third largest ATM manufacturer in the world, is mulling of setting up an assembling unit in India.

The unit is being planned to cater to the needs of neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh and Pakistan, and also to cater to domestic needs.

"India will emerge as one of the leading countries in three to four years in banking and an expected demand from countries around the sub-continent is also slated grow. We see an opportunity and plans to tap this by setting up an assembling unit in the country," Wincor Nixdorf, managing director (indirect sales, banking division) Jorg Brinkmoller told Business Standard.

The company is planning to set up an assembly line near to Mumbai and would also look at selling it to other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and in various geographies of East Africa.

He, however, did not reveal the proposed investments for setting up the plant.

The company intends to manufacture the machine at its headquarters in Germany, which would be brought down to India in a semi or completely knocked-down format. The machines would be assembled here and exported to countries across the globe.

Wincor is the third largest ATM manufacturer in the world after NCR and Diebold and is the leading supplier of cash dispensing and multi-function banking terminals in Europe.

On the sales front, the company intends to sell over 500 ATMs in India this calendar year and is in talks with major banks in the country. At present, Wincor has customers in ICICI Bank, UTI Bank and HDFC Bank among others.

The company is also looking at providing assistance to banks in information technology and business intelligence among others, which would be the revenue earners in the country.
