December 05, 2002 14:56 IST

The Union Power Ministry has selected Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) for the National Energy Conservation Award 2002, first prize in the integrated steel plants sector.

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat will present the award on December 14 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

It may be recalled that VSP was awarded second prize in 2001 and commendation in 2000.

VSP has launched a major drive for energy conservation at the grassroots level right from its inception. Its efforts in implementing 114 energy conservation projects had helped save Rs 114 crore (Rs 1.14 billion) during 2001-02.

Reduction in energy cost was achieved by improved monitoring of energy efficiency parameters, besides improving the calorific value of product fuel gases like coke oven gas, the functioning of waste energy recovery systems like back pressure turbine station, gas expansion turbine station and LD gas recovery plant.
